Development of the recycling industry Since 1942, the scrap merchant has evolved to include both small and also very highly sophisticated and equipped businesses, both of which supports substantial skilled and unskilled labour forces thus creating much needed jobs in South Africa. The scrap metal recycling businesses purchase, sort, process and sell both ferrous scrap metal and non-ferrous scrap metal as a secondary raw material for beneficiation by the local and international industry.
